One Step Forward...

I am so grateful to have found a school for George where they not only accept him as is, and work with him and his needs; but one with teachers and staff that challenge him and study him and constantly question their own techniques to see if they are doing all they can. The last six months have been AMAZING for George. All of his skills have improved, his energy is up, his brain is going a mile a minute, he's talking, he's pushing limits, he's becoming the class clown, he's tantruming far more..... oh yeah, some of that's not so good.

I spent a half hour with the director of his "regular" preschool today after dropping him off. They've been struggling with him, I've been struggling with him, we all know he needs something, but we don't yet know what. It's hard to have these conversations. Wonderful, but hard. Every time I think we've "solved" his issues, life cycles around to remind me that there is always something new around the corner. But I have to remember that, with George, it is a cycle. Whenever we get to these points in life where everyone that comes into contact with him is struggling, and he's pushing every attention-getting button we have, and it feels like this is all impossible... he's changing. There is some new development happening in his brain. We're getting ready for a breakthrough. This time next week (or maybe the week after, or a bit more), we will have gone beyond this point in the cycle and we'll be looking at a new kid that has one more achievement under his belt.

Just gotta get there.

How do you stay so positive through it all . . . and how do you think of such fantastic pictures to represent your thoughts.

You're an inspiration to me. And one I need right now!

You are so right! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me (us) - I think this is so true for any child - or even adult (if you really think about it). Liam is going thru some horrible temper tantrums and the woman who watches him during the day said "I think he is more frustrated NOW because he can hear (Liam got tubes in his ears and they are CLEAR for the first time in ... forever maybe?) but he still has to catch up in speech - to learn to make the words and sound like us so we can understand him". Anyway, sorry to be long winded, but your post really struck a nerve that I needed right now. So again, thanks - and just so you know - George has the best possible mother he could have. I am serious about that!

Great photo Meg! I think that is so true of every child - just when you think you have them figured out, they hit you with something new. Sounds like George is in great hands - both at school and at home :)
